Amazon.com Review
Unless your species evolved sometime after 1993 when Jurassic Park hit theaters, you're no doubt familiar with this dinosaur-bites-man disaster tale set on an island theme park gone terribly wrong. But if Speilberg's amped-up CGI creation left you longing for more scientific background and ... well, character development, check out the original Michael Crichton novel. Although not his best book (get ahold of sci-fi classic The Andromeda Strain for that), Jurassic Park fills out the film version's kinetic story line with additional scenes, dialogue, and explanations while still maintaining Crichton's trademark thrills-'n'-chills pacing. As ever, the book really is better than the movie. --Paul Hughes

Product Description

5 out of 5 stars RIVETING...   August 25, 2010
Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle)

This is definitely one of the author's most enjoyable books. It is hard to believe that it was first published nearly twenty years ago. The fact that the book is still selling like hotcakes is testament to the strength of the story storyline. As with many of the author's books, there is definitely a moral to the story, as there usually is when a desire for profit and science are combined.

The premise of the book is fascinating. A wealthy man has a desire to make even more money. He comes up with a concept that be believes will be a sure fire winner. Design a new type of theme amusement part, one that is peppered with dinosaurs. To that end, he buys a remote island for his project and hires the best scientists and engineers that money can buy. They manage to come up with a process for cloning dinosaurs from recovered DNA, which will ensure that their goals are met and Jurassic Park becomes a reality.

There are, however, a couple of little glitches that need to be addressed before opening Jurassic Park to the general public. So, money bags invites a couple of experts, a paleontologist, a botanist, and a mathematician to the island for a dry run, as well as his own grandchildren. When they arrive, having been kept somewhat in the dark as to what to expect and thinking that the island is just some kind of grandiose resort, they are taken aback when they discover what really awaits them. Let the games begin!

This is an exciting tale in which science and non-stop action combine in a way that will rivet the reader to the pages of this book. Well-written and suspenseful, it is a book that keeps the reader in its thrall. Those who like techno-thrillers will derive much enjoyment from this masterfully told tale, which manages to educate and entertain at the same time.

3 out of 5 stars Fun reading (SPOILER ALERT)   July 29, 2010

Jurassic Park works as a piece of fiction because of its engaging premise and because it contains DINOSAURS. The characters are flat, yet likable and the story is plain fun to read. Having read the book again after ~16 years, I was suprised to rediscover how much the movie strays from Crichton's original story. This novel is all setup for the first 200 pages. When the drama and action do start to unfold, the result (via Crichton's dry, clinical prose) is underwhelming. I would have appreciated a subtler venue for the theme/moral of the story other than Crichton's philosophical megaphone in the form of the character Malcolm. The resolution is also botched and silly - going into a pit to count dinosaur eggs after the past 24-hour hellish ordeal seems both out of character and unbelievably reckless. I also found it insulting that the raptors become docile and stupid when the characters enter the den. Despite these criticisms, if you have a fondness of heart or intellect for gigantic prehistoric beasts with big claws and bigger teeth, it's really hard not to enjoy this read.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!   July 12, 2010

I saw the movie before I read the book and now I love both. The book added more dimensions than the movie did and there was a lot more conflict than just staying away from dinosaurs in the book. The characters were well developed and their different and often conflicting objectives made it interesting. The only warning is that it is rather grusome and bloody. Overall it was a terrific book and I highly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing read!   July 9, 2010

Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park is a modern-day tale based on technology gone wrong. This book paved the way for other science fiction thriller novels that based their plots around new and emerging technologies of the 21st century, in specific genetic experimentation and technology.
With the newly discovered powers of genetic experimentation and recreation also came the allure of untold success and wealth. This attraction led the enthusiastic but ignorant business man, John Hammond, to create an amusement park that harnessed these new scientific discoveries. After all, who wouldn't want to see animals that once existed millions of years ago brought back to life? But, as the park's completion was about to be announced, events occurred with these once extinct animals that quickly spiraled out of control and endangered all those residing at the park. As, Dr. Ian Malcolm stated, "Life is actually a series of encounters in which one event may change those that follow in a wholly unpredictable, even devastating way."
Michael Crichton masters the art of suspension and action into a science fiction tale of genetic experimentation. His character development is exquisite and vivid descriptions of technology gone wrong make the reader think twice about the ever increasing use of scientific discoveries. His knowledge of genetics and computer sciences incorporated into this story allows the reader to have a better appreciation and excitement for science. However, this knowledge can make the book difficult to understand at times.
Overall, this book is very skillfully written and enjoyable. It pulls the reader in from the very beginning with its descriptions, credibility and implied ethnical questions regarding genetic cloning and experimentation. However, because of its technical language and explanations I would recommend this book for an older audience.

5 out of 5 stars The book really IS better than the movie   July 6, 2010
H. Dunleavy (New York, NY USA)
When the Jurassic Park movie came out back in 1993, my parents wouldn't permit me to see it until I read the book first. As a 12-year-old kid on summer break that just wanted to see the movie with her friends, this was miserable! I devoured this book in an attempt to read it before all of my friends had seen it already in the theaters. Looking back, however, the book was an amazing story and much better than the movie!!
